Yep, pretty much. In some ways the efficacy of a medicine in actually curing a disease (obviously, this only applies to certain types of illnesses) is becoming a non-issue over time.
BUT, that doesn’t mean placebos, or treatments which have not been proven to be more effective than placebos, should be available on the NHS. I can’t see the logic (or ethics) in me paying to have a doctor lie to you – even if it does quite literally make you feel better.
Have you read Bad Science? If not, do it. Do it soon.
The placebo effect is fascinating. You don’t have to be “fooled” for it to work. For example branded expensive paracetamol works better than the 16p stuff *even* if you know they are the same chemical and that there can be no different medical effect.

On cost issues, no can can disagree that drug companies need to be carefully vetted in order to provide best value – I can certainly vouch for the uselessness of Prozac! However, I note that NICE are themselves up for scrutiny.
The problem with placebos is not cost since any prescription will contribute handsomely to the coffers (except in Wales), but that patients start suing when they find out.
In today’s cost-cutting culture I am rather suspicious this was a rather pathetic attempt at saying ‘look, we’re doing our bit’ – £4m is piffling.

Certainly had some effect on me. I had never smashed the house up before Prozac, but after, it was a twice weekly event, until I stopped taking them.
(And NO. I am NOT joking!)
If placebos “work” by people THINKING they work, then surely the same applys to the “real” medicine, and screws the fugures RIGHT up?
